You can multistream to Twitch, YouTube and Facebook and have perfect video syncing, but chat ends up staggered across platforms — viewers on one platform respond while you’re still reacting to messages on another. Why a cloud relay — and why Restream?
Multistreaming from your local machine is simple, but it makes recovery and bandwidth expensive and often increases latency when you try to optimize for multiple endpoints. A cloud relay sits between your encoder (OBS, Streamlabs, vMix, etc.) and the platforms. It takes one high-quality incoming stream and redistributes it, which lowers outgoing bandwidth requirements and centralizes distribution logic.
Restream is an attractive partner in that stack: it’s a mature multistreaming hub, handles distribution and recording, and offers a unified chat product. But Restream alone won’t magically align platform-native chat latencies — platform delivery and client-side players dictate a lot. The trick is to use Restream as a single chat source for your broadcast overlays and producer view, and optionally run a small cloud relay to handle ingestion and protocol choices (SRT/WebRTC) for lower end-to-end latency.
Core idea in one sentence
Send a single low-latency stream from your encoder to a small cloud relay (or direct to Restream), use Restream for distribution, and centralize chat via Restream Chat (or a simple cloud chat-relay bot) so your OBS overlay and producer chat see the same messages with sub-second timestamps.
What you’ll need
- A Restream.io account (Free/Standard depending on features you need).
- A small VPS in a region near you and Restream ingest points (DigitalOcean, Hetzner, or AWS Lightsail — $5–$10/month is often enough).
- OBS (or another encoder) configured for low-latency output — consider SRT or WebRTC where supported.
- A lightweight chat relay process (Node.js script) to unify chats and push to Restream Chat or your OBS browser source.
- Basic knowledge of platform chat APIs: Twitch (tmi.js), YouTube LiveChat API, Facebook Live Chat (Graph API).
Why a small VPS helps latency
Two reasons: one, you can pick a low-latency protocol (SRT or SRT + NDI/RTMP tuning) that gives better performance than raw RTMP over unpredictable consumer connections. Two, you reduce the number of network hops from your encoder to Restream and platforms — your VPS acts as a geographic relay close to Restream ingest points.
Example workflows I’ve used:
- OBS -> SRT -> VPS (srt-live-transmit or NGINX with SRT module) -> Restream (RTMP) -> Platforms
- OBS -> RTMP -> Restream -> Platforms + Restream Chat as unified chat source (simplest)
- OBS -> WebRTC -> Restream (if you’re on a plan that supports WebRTC outputs) -> Platforms
Building the relay: practical steps
1) Provision a VPS
- Pick a small instance: 1 vCPU, 1–2 GB RAM is usually enough for routing; $5–$10/mo is sufficient.
- Use a region near Restream ingest endpoints (Europe: Amsterdam; US: Ashburn/Atlanta; check Restream docs).
2) Set up a minimal streaming proxy
- Install ffmpeg + srt-tools (or use srt-live-transmit). NGINX with the RTMP module also works if you prefer RTMP handling.
- Configure your VPS to accept SRT or RTMP from OBS and push to Restream. Example conceptual command (SRT -> RTMP):
Note: I’m omitting raw commands here because distro packages vary. The pattern is: accept input, transcode minimally (if at all), and push to restream RTMP url/key.
3) Configure Restream
- Set up your destinations (Twitch, YouTube, Facebook, etc.) in Restream.
- Integrate Restream Chat — enable the chat overlay and the producer view. Restream Chat aggregates platform chats for you and provides a unified websocket for browser sources and stream overlays.
4) Centralize chat (critical for sub-second sync)
- Use Restream Chat as the source for your OBS browser source overlay. Because Restream’s chat service aggregates messages and timestamps them when they reach Restream, your overlay will show the unified feed.
- If you need absolute control (more accurate timing, moderation rules, or to rebroadcast messages back to platform chats), run a small Node.js relay on the VPS that:
- - connects to Twitch via tmi.js
- - connects to YouTube via the LiveChat API (PubSub/WebSockets)
- - listens to Restream Chat websocket (or your OBS browser source) and rebroadcasts a normalized stream of messages to your overlay
5) Syncing and timestamps
- When a message arrives from a platform, your relay should attach a server-generated timestamp and optionally an event id. Use the server time (UTC) to normalize across platforms.
- Push messages to the OBS overlay via a websocket or by pointing the browser source at your VPS-hosted frontend that consumes the relay’s websocket. Websocket latency here is typically sub-100ms if hosted sensibly.
Implementation tips and gotchas
- Use SRT or WebRTC where possible: RTMP is fine, but SRT offers lower latency and resilience. OBS supports SRT; Restream accepts RTMP, so your VPS can accept SRT and re-emit RTMP to Restream.
- Beware platform constraints: YouTube’s LiveChat can introduce additional delay compared to Twitch. A relay won’t change platform delivery time, but it lets your overlay show the messages the moment they are received by your relay/Restream, which feels synchronous to the producer and local audience.
- Rate limits and moderation: Aggregating and rebroadcasting messages can trigger rate limits or violate TOS if you automate message reposts to platforms. Build moderation and rate-limiting into your relay.
- Fallbacks: If Restream Chat goes down, have your VPS serve a direct overlay that connects to the platform chats you care about.
- Testing: I run A/B tests: one setup where OBS overlays use Restream Chat, and another where overlays use my VPS websocket. I measure perceived lag by sending time-synced messages from bots and tracking arrival to the overlay.
Costs, complexity and when to skip the relay
If you’re a solo creator with reliable upload bandwidth, sending directly to Restream and using Restream Chat for your overlays is often enough and simplest. Add a VPS when you need:
- Lower end-to-end latency via SRT/WebRTC
- Custom moderation or cross-posting rules
- Control over ingest and distribution during outages
Running a VPS + a small Node.js Chat relay will cost you less than £10/month in many regions and buys you a lot of control. The trade-off is the engineering time and maintenance for chat APIs that change.
Quick checklist before you go live
- Confirm OBS is sending to VPS/Restream using the intended protocol (SRT/RTMP) and at your target bitrate.
- Verify Restream destinations are configured and in low-latency mode where possible.
- Open your overlay browser source and confirm it connects to Restream Chat or your relay websocket — send test messages from each platform.
- Test moderation flows and rate limit handling with bots before a big stream.
- Monitor CPU/network on the VPS during a dry run; adjust transcode or forwarding settings if the server is stressed.
